I have not done it myself, but watch tons of decorating shows. The main consideration about water or oil based should be your ability to open it to fresh air (or just leave for a week elsewhere), as you don't want to endanger your health. The oil based may be a little longer lasting, but both are good products if they are a good brand. In either case, 2 thinner coats are better than a single one for longer lasting.
